Think about it. We sit a lot! Whether it is at the computer, eating meals, relaxing, talking, meeting or driving. The majority of our awake hours are spent on our bottoms. A scary fact to consider is that the average Americans sit 9.3 hours each day. That sure is a lot of tush time!
So, what is the downside of sitting and why is it so detrimental to our health?
Studies have shown that sitting for more than a mere hour decreases the production of enzymes that burn fat by about 90%. Sitting can slow down our metabolism and is also related to higher incidences of disease. Yikes! Higher rates of heart disease, diabetes and some cancers are related to sitting or on the flip-side, lack of exercise? One study in circulation showed that for each hour of extra TV sitting we do, the risk of dying rises 11%.
So, what’s the solution to all of this?
A standing desk will get you upright but the bottom line is real movement – in the form of real exercise, like walking.

Have a Walking Meeting.
For one-on-one meetings take a walk and set a goal for the day of 10, 000 steps which will add up to 5 miles!
Moving with a Buddy Increases Motivation and Accountability.
Walking in Nature Can also Prompt Creativity and Insight.
Nature is inspirational and allows one to be fully present. It is ever-changing and can provide the perfect environment for getting into the moment in a fully concentrated way.
Practice Walking and Talking Meetings.
You can influence other people to exercise as well, just by being a good role model!

Carve Out Time for Yourself.
Carving out time in your schedule to exercise is not selfish, it’s time to place exercise on the top of your priority list. Having walking-and-talking work meetings may be the easiest way to be more productive and present.
